Homemade Bomb Explodes on West Des Moines Resident’s Porch

The device was made of a 2-liter Dr. Thunder soda pop bottle.

A West Des Moines resident reported to police that someone threw a pop-bottle bomb on his front porch late Friday evening.

There was no damage from the device, which West Des Moines police said was made from a Dr. Thunder soda pop bottle and contained balled-up aluminum and an unknown liquid. Dr. Thunder is a brand of soda produced for Walmart stores.

The victim, who lives on Dogwood Lane, told Officer Shawn Miller that he was in bed about 10:30 p.m. Friday when he heard a loud noise outside. He looked outside, but saw nothing suspicious, according to the report.

The next morning, he saw what had happened.

The contents of the homemade bomb were spattered on the front porch, porch pillar, stairs and the walkway from the front door to the driveway. All are made of concrete, according to the report.
