Zombies Invade Patch Editor's West Des Moines Neighborhood

The Zombie Walk from Valley Junction to the Val Air Ballroom in West Des Moines drew dozens of the undead. And, drivers pulled off to watch, while residents popped out of their houses to watch real-life zombies rather than college football.

Living across the street from the -- once renowned for hosting performances by Guy Lombardo and Lawrence Welk's orchestras -- has its benefits.

The neighborhood is often temporarily invaded by the fans of whatever band are taking the stage at the historic venue. Tonight, our street was full of zombies walking, er shuffling briskly, from to the Val Air.

In Iowa State Fair style, I grabbed my camera to snap some photos while my husband, Dan, leaned on our fence and cordially nodded to the growling, moaning, disfigured masses as they shuffled past our front door.

I fended off an attack by a baby zombie in a stroller -- mom showed some mercy -- and managed not to rile the West Des Moines Police Department's canine, who voiced his displeasure at the crowd with the loudest growls of all.

It's all great people -- alive or undead -- watching.
