When are Spring Clean-Up Days in West Des Moines? Plus, Dates for Other Disposal Events

Spring Clean-Up for West Des Moines residents is scheduled on regular garbage pick-up days during the first full week of June.

A news release from the city of West Des Moines:

Get ready to do some spring housecleaning. The city's annual spring clean-up is scheduled for June 3-7. 

The event will not disrupt regular solid waste collection, which will still occur on residents' regular days.

Spring Clean-Up Days are city wide collection days organized for residents to dispose of large household items. Think of all the things you would like to get rid of during an intense spring cleaning – that is what Spring Clean-Up Days are for.

All items should be on the curb by 6 a.m. on your scheduled spring cleanup day. All smaller items must be bagged or boxed. 


The following items will not be accepted: 
• Tires 
• Vehicles and/or major auto parts. 
• Buildings, major building parts, or large piles of building material. 
• Concrete chunks (ALL SIZES). 
• Asphalt shingles over 65 lbs. in total weight. 
• Banned substances such as 
    o lead 
    o acid 
    o batteries 
    o waste oil 
    o explosive material 
    o medical waste 
    o drugs 
    o poisons 
    o highly combustible material 
    o paint 
    o any other toxic or hazardous substance 
• Animal Carcasses. 

The following appliances will not be accepted during Spring Clean-Up: 
• Refrigerators 
• Washers 
• Dehumidifiers 
• Freezers 
• Furnaces 
• Air Conditioners 
• Stoves 
• Dryers 
• Microwaves 
• Water Heaters 
• Dishwashers

To arrange for a pickup of any of these appliances, call Waste Connections at 265-7374, or include them in the next Scrap Appliance & Metal Drop-Off (Sept. 14) at the Public Works Facility at 560 S. 16th Street.! These drop-off events are open to all West Des Moines residents.

Do you have residential hazardous waste in your home? There will be a Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Event at Valley Stadium on June 29 from 8 a.m. until noon.   convenient house-side hazardous waste collection is now available:  Residential Hazardous Waste - House Side Collection

Spring Cleanup is available to all West Des Moines residents who are eligible for solid waste collection (single family homes up to and including four-plex units).
