Oh, Floppy – Say It Isn't So?

Protestors gathered at the State Historical Building Sunday to save the 30-year star of the "The Floppy Show" on WHO-TV, whose display at the museum will be retired to make room for a new one.

Fans of a popular puppet that spent 30 years introducing cartoons on WHO-TV in Des Moines were not happy when they heard he was going away.

Last week, KCCI Channel 8 reported the State Historical Museum planned to retire the 21-year-old display dedicated to the popular canine character and star of the children's program "The Floppy Show", which aired from 1957 to 1987. Floppy starred in the show with his real-life partner Duane Ellett

Fans were less than thrilled with the news.

A group of protestors gathered at the Museum on Sunday – Floppy's 56th birthday – to make sure organizers knew that Floppy should remain on display there, WHO reported.

Some fans took to KCCI's U Local, starting a forum called "Save Floppy from being taken down".

"Floppy was an icon to some of us growing up in Iowa.  It was something we looked forward to every afternoon." DBCongressMember

The museum is replacing the display with a new exhibit focused on the history of RAGBRAI, according to WHO. The new exhibit is scheduled to open on July 18.

The collection will be carefully preserved and stored, KCCI reports. It may return to the main display areas in the future, but it's not known yet.
