The 2013 Hy-Vee Fishing Derby is less than a month away! Come to Water Works Park on Saturday, May 18, from 8 am to 1 pm for fishing fun. Children up to the age of 15 have the opportunity to fish and win prizes.
Funds raised from this event go directly to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa’s mentoring programs. These funds allow us to make more life-changing matches between Bigs and Littles. The lives of children are changed for the better, forever.
With an anticipated visitor attendance of more than 30,000 people, our volunteers are key to the event's success. We need 150 volunteers to help distribute bait, hand out ice cream, help children fish, help keep the park clean, and much more. Interested in volunteering? What better way to get in the spirit of the Fishing Derby than cool “under the sea” themed crafts?
- Counting Octopus: Practice counting skills while making an octopus made out of paper plates, ribbon and clothespins. This craft from Reading Confetti is educational and fun!
- Jellyfish Craft: Long strands of ribbon add a whimsical, flowy touch to these jellyfish. This craft from Scrapbooks Etc. is too cute!
- Recycled CD Fish: EcoSuperior has a great idea for what to do with that pile of cd’s collecting dust. Make a high-tech looking school of fish!
- Fish Fleece Pillows Toys: This craft from Better Homes & Gardens is so adorable– you’ll want to make theses colorful fish right away!
Hope to see you at the Hy-Vee Fishing Derby!
