What’s Open, What’s Closed in West Des Moines on Thanksgiving 2012?

It'll be quiet up to a point, and then West Des Moines, the retail hub of the metro area, will spring to life.

What’s open? Not a lot. What’s closed? Almost everything – the post office; city, county, state and federal offices; banks; doctors’ offices and professional offices;  – with some exceptions.

Hy-Vee grocery stores will be open. Hy-Vee has stores at 1990 Grand Ave., 1725 Jordan Creek Parkway, and 555 S. 51st St.

Dahl’s Foods stores at 5003 E.P. True Parkway and 1208 Prospect Ave. will be closed.

Trader Joe’s will be closed.

Whole Foods Market will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The emergency rooms at Methodist West Hospital and Mercy West Lakes will be open.

The West Des Moines Public Library will be closed.

West Des Moines Community Schools will be closed Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Dowling Catholic High School will be closed Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Century 20 Jordan Creek and XD theaters are open all day.

On Thanksgiving evening, West Des Moines turns the lights back on.

Many retail stores in West Des Moines will be opening Thanksgiving evening to get a jump on Black Friday sales. They include Walmart, Best Buy (with stores at 4100 University Ave. and 6825 Mills Civic Parkway); Kohl's and Target, which has stores in at 1800 Valley West Drive and Jordan Creek Town Center.

Both Jordan Creek Town Center and Valley West Mall open at midnight.
