Every February, the runs its campaign for YPartners – a fundraising effort in the community to help raise scholarship dollars for families and individuals who wish to partake in a membership or our programs.
As part of the campaign this past February, we held a silent auction full of great items and services donated from various people or organizations here in the community. One of the services up for auction was an individual or small group basketball lesson with me.
The winner was YMCA member Mary Pat Lamair. Her daughter Alla, 7, and son Isaiah, 4, had participated in our basketball clinics in the winter and also played in the league at the John R. Grubb YMCA. They both loved their experiences with YMCA basketball and came in recently to collect their prize and further their YMCA
basketball experience.
Alla and Isaiah worked on their dribbling, passing, and shooting skills and did a great job! I was thoroughly impressed with their ability to dribble with right and left hands while changing directions through cones. I wasn’t surprised to hear they
love to play at home.
After playing a couple shooting and passing games, working on layups among other things, Alla and Isaiah were on their way with big smiles on their faces. Mary Pat says they look forward to future opportunities with the Y.
“I was a Y member in California before I moved back to Iowa,” said Mary Pat. “My dad is a ‘lifetime’ member at the Riverfront Branch and I’ve always preferred the Y, being a swimmer. Now with the kids, I really appreciate the Y’s youth programs as well as the community aspect.”
The Walnut Creek YMCA looks forward to many years of watching the Lemairs enjoy our different programs as they are a ton of fun and a delight to be around. Thanks, Mary Pat, for your donation and for bringing in your fantastic kids to practice with me.
