'Emergency Need for Blood': Iowa Red Cross Blood Supplies Running Low
A slow June has local Red Cross officials urgently seeking more blood donations. Find times to drop by the Des Moines or Ames offices.

The Red Cross of Greater Iowa has issued an emergency call for blood after falling short of its June donation goals.
"Blood and platelet donors of all blood types are needed. Almost 50,000 fewer donations were made during June than expected." reads the alert on the Red Cross of Greater Iowa website.

Officials said Tuesday their stockpile has dipped 10% because summer donations aren't keeping up with demand. They said summers are typically slow because people are busy with vacations and some of their biggest donors-- college and high school students, are on break.
"We are requesting an urgent appeal for anyone with any type of blood to come out, take an hour of your time, and donate blood for the patients in the hospitals,” said Danielle Grab, with The American Red Cross.

The Des Moines office at 2116 Grand Ave. is open Monday - Thursday from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m.
The Ames office at 426 Fifth St., Suite 101, is open Thursdays from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.; other days and times by appointment only.
