Horney Bull Charges Ahead After Embezzlement Report

Owner of cowboy-themed bar wrangling rumors that the new West Des Moines venture is closed.

Exasperation and frustration coated Dwaine Landon’s voice as he talked about an alleged attack on The Horney Bull, his “cowboy party bar and redneck circus” located in the cavernous 10,000-square -foot building at  1720 25th Street that formerly housed Uncle Buck’s.

“Will this get some people in the bar?” Landon asked, almost pleading. “It’s still open.”

Landon lives in Seward, NE and says he “got into business with the wrong person.” According to a report on file at the West Des Moines Police Department, the “wrong person” is the bar’s former managing partner, who Landon alleges embezzled between $35,000 and $50,000. The suspect has a long record, according to an Iowa Courts Online search.

As the relationship between the two soured, the suspect reportedly called bar vendors claiming that the bar had gone out of business and that he was the new owner. That “hindered deliveries,” according to the report.

In response, Landon and his associates got an injunction in Polk County District Court to stop the suspect from entering the bar, removing property from the premises or interfering with business operations by contacting third-party vendors, according to the report.

On Sunday, two days after the original police report was filed, a consultant hired by Landon to conduct a forensics audit reported that he was receiving harassing text messages, including one that police viewed that simply read: “hahaha,” according to the report.

The consultant has been unable to recover any of the money that was embezzled. The audit reportedly revealed that the suspect paid employees with cash rather than using the bar’s payroll outsourcing company and allegedly engaged in other fraudulent activities, Landon said.

Meanwhile, Landon wants folks to know that The Horney Bull is still a great place to frequent for folks who like to dance country music, ride mechanical bulls, play pool and shuffleboard, and climb ropes. There’s even a clown in a dunk tank baiting the bar clientele as they walk in.
