Meals from the Heartland Groundbreaking Ceremony Today

Dignitaries will gather at 2 p.m. to break ground on land donated by real estate titan Bill Knapp.

Local dignitaries will gather at 2 p.m. today at 357 Lincoln St. for a groundbreaking ceremony for the Patty Cownie Center, the new home for the hunger relief organization Meals from the Heartland.

Dignitaries on hand will include Meals from the Heartland board and staff, West Des Moines Mayor Steve Gaer, and representatives of the West Des Moines City Council, the Polk County Board of Supervisors and the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines.

The 14,841 square-foot Patty Cownie Center will serve as the new Meals from the Heartland headquarters as well as provide year-round meal packaging opportunities for its hunger-relief efforts.

Since 2008, more than 100,000 volunteers have donated time and funding to prepare more than 31 million meals for food-insecure people in Iowa and around the world. The land on which the building will be constructed was donated by Bill Knapp, and the $1.9 million project has been 92% funded by individual and business sponsors.

357 Lincoln Street is located south of Railroad Avenue in West Des Moines.
