West Des Moines Woman Reportedly Driving Wrong Way Dies in Collision

Two others injured in three-vehicle pileup on Interstate 80 25 miles west of the metro.

A West Des Moines woman reportedly driving the wrong way on Interstate 80 near Earlham early Sunday morning died of injuries sustained when her vehicle crashed head-on with another car.

Megan Wakeham, 24, of West Des Moines, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to an accident report issued by the Iowa State Patrol.

The drivers of two other vehicle were injured in the accident, including Jessie Leeper, 20, of Adair, whose Pontiac Firebird was reportedly hit head-on by Wakeham’s Chevrolet Aveo. Leeper was driving west in the westbound lane when the collision occurred. Wakham was eastbound in the westbound lane.

After the crash, Leeper’s vehicle was struck from behind by a westbound GMC Terrain SUV driven by Lori Wallace, 49, of Greenfield, according to the report.

Leeper was transported by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Wallace was taken to Iowa Methodist Medical Center, according to the report. Information about their condition is not known.
