Lifetree Cafe-Radical Islam

Why Islamic radicals America
and the West will be discussed at Lifetree Café, 10 a.m., Sunday, August 10, and
at 7 p.m., Thursday, August 14, at the West Des Moines United Methodist Church,
720 Grand Avenue, West Des Moines, Iowa.

The program, titled “Why Do
They Hate Us? Understanding Radical Islam,” features filmed with Middle East
experts Carl Medearis and Gregory Johnsen, along with Mark Bowden, author of
Black Hawk Down and The Finish: The Killing of Osama Bin Laden.

“There are 1.7 billion
Muslims in the world and far less than one percent might be radical enough to
become terrorists,” says Medearis, an advisor on Arab affairs to members of the
U. S. Congress. Medearis, who lived for a dozen years in Beirut, identifies key
forces that lead to radicalizing Muslims and suggests how common ground might
be found.
