Couple from India Want House 'Egging' Investigated as Hate Crime

West Des Moines police referred the couple to the Dallas County Attorney's Office.

A West Des Moines couple whose house has been “egged” twice since March has asked authorities to investigate the vandalism as hate crimes.

The couple are originally from India, according to reports on file at the West Des Moines Police Department.

On a night in March, police took a report from a woman who said she was awakened about 11:15 p.m. by what she described as “loud thudding noises” hitting the side of her home.

Her husband was out of town at the time of the incident, according to the report, so she called a neighbor and asked him if he could see anyone outside the home. When he reported nothing suspicious, she returned to bed, but awoke the next morning to find eggs had been broken in about a dozen places on the side of her home.

Saturday, the woman’s husband reported hearing cracking noises hitting the back of his house. When he ran outside to investigate, he saw a pickup parked behind his home drive away rapidly, Officer Brad Herrera wrote in his report.

Several raw eggs had been thrown, “leaving a mess” on the side of the home.

“He believes this incident is a hate crime,” Herrera wrote.

The couple were referred to the Dallas County Attorney’s Office to pursue hate-crime charges, according to the report.
