Man Jailed After Another West Des Moines Crime ‘Spray’

Suspect tells police he was "jumped for no reason."

Tempers flared along with the temperature in West Des Moines Sunday when a 46-year-old man removed his shirt and tried to urinate in trash cans in front of others enjoying the summer-like weather at .

arrested Robert Laverne May, 46, of 1616 Vine St. and charged him with public intoxication after they were called to break up a fight at the park, located at 2500 Grand Ave.

Witnesses told police that May was causing problems in the park. According to the report filed by Officer Ben Woods, “he was walking around without his shirt on and he was drunk. He also tried to urinate in a trash can while other people were present.”

May told police he was “jumped for no reason,” according to Woods’ report, but offered police no information about who the alleged assailant was.

Polcie said May’s speech was slurred and he was unstable on his feet. A preliminary breathalyzer test put his blood alcohol content at .25 percent, police said.

He was transported to the West Des Moines Jail for booking, then transported to the Polk County Jail, where he remained behind bars Monday night.
