Reported Marijuana Medical Emergency Leads to Possession Charges

A West Des Moines man reported feeling ill after he and his friend smoked a joint.

A West Des Moines woman was charged and charges are pending against her friend who became ill after the two reportedly shared a marijuana joint late Friday night, according to police reports.

West Des Moines Police Officer Barry Graham was dispatched about 10:30 p.m. Friday night to the 5500 block of Boulder Drive after a 27-year-old woman reported that her friend, whom she was visiting, “was having some side effects that made her concerned about his well-being.”

Her friend, the 39-year-old resident of the house, was taken to Mercy West Lakes for evaluation.

According to Graham’s report, the man appeared to be having trouble breathing and his heart was racing. He reportedly told police he began feeling ill shortly after he and his friend smoked the joint.

Charges are pending against the man, and his friend was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.
