UPDATE: Police Identify Driver Killed at West Des Moines Interchange

The accident happened just before 6 a.m. at the interchange of Interstates 235, 35 and 80, West Des Moines authorities said.

Police have identified the driver that died in a Wednesday morning accident that tied up traffic at a West Des Moines interchange as Jeffrey Douglas Jones, 21, originally from Shellsburg, but most recently a resident of Earlham.

Police have not released additional details of the crash and are continuing their investigation.

One person is dead following an accident at the west mixmaster in West Des Moines Wednesday morning, according to WHO-TV.

West Des Moines Police say the accident happened around 5:50 a.m. when a car left the roadway, crossed several lanes of traffic, and hit a concrete barrier. The single occupant of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene, the TV station reported.

Police are not releasing the name of the person killed until family can be notified.

The investigation into the crash continues, but police say it is likely speed played a factor.

Clean-up of the accident continues and traffic in the area is congested. Drivers are asked to avoid the area.
