UPDATE: More Details on Teacher's Alleged Sex Abuse with Students

A complaint in Dallas County District Court alleges that an Urbandale Middle School teacher had sex with a 13-year-old student on three occasions and on three occasions with a 14-year-old former student.

The complaint was released by the West Des Moines Police Department, which arrested Benjamin Joseph Hoffman, 23, of West Des Moines on Monday. 

He was charged with 11 counts of sex abuse, one count of sexual exploitation by a school employee and two counts of providing alcohol to a minor

The sex acts occurred on June 3, June 10, July 3.

An Urbandale Middle School teacher charged Wednesday with 11 counts of sex abuse and related charges has been placed on administrative leave, the Des Moines Register reported.

“I find this entire situation shocking and sad on many fronts,” Stilwell wrote in an email to the newspaper. “The Urbandale Community School District, and specifically Urbandale Middle School, is committed to support students as we work through the many layers of this issue.”

Stilwell said Urbandale school officials learned of the alleged abuse from West Des Moines police, who arrested Hoffman Wednesday afternoon. 

Hoffman was a first-year teacher at Urbandale, where he was paid $39,383.

An Urbandale Middle School teacher has been arrested and charged with multiple counts of sex abuse in connection with alleged inappropriate contact with two teenagers, West Des Moines police said in a statement late Wednesday afternoon.

Benjamin Joseph Hoffman, 23, of West Des Moines was arrested about 4 p.m. on warrants for 11 counts of Sex Abuse in the 3rd degree (Class C Felony), one count of Sexual Exploitation by School Employee (Class D Felony) and two counts of Providing Alcohol to a Minor (Serious Misdemeanor).

Police Spokesman Lt. James Barrett said the charges stem from Hoffman’s alleged sexual contact with a 13-year-old, who at the time was a current student of his at the Urbandale Middle School, and a 14-year-old former student of Hoffman’s when he was a student teacher at Norwalk Middle School

The alleged acts occurred from May of 2013 to July of 2013 at the West Des Moines apartment where Hoffman was living at the time.

Hoffman was booked and transported to the Dallas County Jail.
