UPDATE: West Des Moines Police Release Victim's Name in Fatal Crash

Danny Earl Knowles, 53, of Des Moines died of injuries in a two-vehicle crash Tuesday night.

West Des Moines Police have released the name of the man who died of injuries in a two-vehicle crash that shut down part of Interstate 35 near the Highway 5 interchange  about 10 p.m. Tuesday 

Danny Earl Knowles, 53, of Des Moines died of injuries sustained after the Pontiac Grand Prix he was driving crossed the median and turned the wrong way into northbound traffic and was struck by an oncoming vehicle. The victim was alone in his car.

Police said Knowles' vehicle went through the guard wires for northbound I-35 traffic, and was struck by a Buick Enclave, which was northbound on I-35 with two occupants. Knowles' vehicle came to a rest on the traveled portion of I-35 northbound, and its headlights were not on or operational, police said.

According to a press release from the police department, both occupants of the Buick suffered what appeared to be minor injuries and were taken to an area hospital. Their names have not been released.

Knowles had to be extricated from his vehicle, was taken to another area hospital and later died.

The accident remains under investigation.
