A Sign of Trouble? Bachmann, Heading Into Caucuses, 'Reschedules' SC Visits

Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, whose campaign has failed to sustain serious traction in any of the early GOP voting states, abruptly cancelled three days' worth of previously scheduled events in South Carolina for the coming week.

Bachmann had originally announced she planned to appear at Furman University in Greenville and Winthrop University in Rock Hill, but an e-mail from an organizer said the Furman event had been cancelled. The Winthrop event has been called off as well.

One of Bachmann’s key players in South Carolina, consultant Wesley Donehue, quickly shot down the notion that Bachmann would not be here after the Iowa caucuses. But Donehue was unable to immediately provide specifics.

“She is still coming here, “ Donehue told Patch. “None of those events were firm anyway. We’re just re-scheduling.”

Bachmann has focused on today’s caucuses on Iowa, which neighbors her native Minnesota, but recent polls show her well back in the pack. Six polls in the past week have her sixth in Iowa polls.

Eric Woolson, Bachmann's Iowa campaign manager, said Tuesday that he knows nothing of the candidate's plans outside of Iowa, other than she plans to fly to South Carolina on Wednesday.

After Bachmann’s team resigned in New Hampshire, she all but dissolved her efforts to compete there. Four polls in the past week find her running fifth in New Hampshire.

The most recent polls in South Carolina showed Bachmann running third or fourth over the past month.
