Indian Hills Teacher’s Artwork Invites Students to Think About 9/11

Indian Hills students were only a year old when terrorists attacked the United States on Sept. 11, 2001; a teacher's artwork is giving them perspective.

A new piece of artwork by teacher Scott Tudor and installed at Indian Hills Junior High encourages students not only to remember the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, but also think about what the tragedy means to them.

Tudor created the commemorative painting at the urging of the school’s teacher librarian, Ann Van Treeck, according to a story on the West Des Moines Community Schools web site.

“The students here were only a year old when 9/11 happened,” said Van Treeck. “They only really remember their parents talking about it.”

Book bindings of actual titles in the Indian Hills library make up the Twin Towers, a quote from George Bush lines the bottom and cutouts of people are scattered at the buildings’ feet.

“I didn’t make it dark to make people sad,” Tudor said. “I wanted to make students have to get up close read the titles of the books and see the small details to make them think.”
