West Des Moines Rotary Gives Away More Bicycles

Clive and Phenix Elementary students have new rides, but more donated bicycles are needed for next year's giveaways.

Twenty-eight students at Clive Elementary School recently received bicycles courtesy of the Rotary Club of West Des Moines, reported Howard Hulleman, the club’s secretary.

Bicycles were donated by West Des Moines residents and the Des Moines Bicycle Collective.  Rotary club members inspected the bicycles and made needed repairs before they were given to the students.  Each student also received a new helmet. 

This was the final bicycle giveaway for 2011-2012 and completes the first full year of the Bicycle Project of the West Des Moines Rotary Club. During this time, nearly 200 bicycles were collected. Two-thirds of them were repaired as needed and cleaned. More than 100 bicycles were given to students in four elementary schools in the .

More bicycles are needed for next year.  Residents having bicycles to donate can drop them off at , 5950 Village View Drive, or at , 301 Grand Ave., both in West Des Moines. 

To have a bicycle picked up at your home, contact Hulleman at 224-4062.  Donations are tax deductible; a receipt will be issued.
