When Should School Start? Survey Offers Your Chance to be Heard

Survey asks if school should start after Labor Day, when winter break should start, whether the district should implement an alternative calendar that includes school during the summer and more.

The 2013-2014 school year is barely under way, but officials with the West Des Moines Community School District are already seeking parents’ input on when school should start next year.

An online survey takes 10-15 minutes to complete, according to a story on the district’s web site, but will give officials important feedback in establishing the first day of school.

  • Do you think the first day of school  should be scheduled after Labor Day?
  • When should winter break fall?
  • What do you think about an alternative calendar that schedules school days during the summer months?

District officials ask that the survey be completed before Oct.28 to give the district calendar committee time to develop proposals for the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 academic years.

Also, if you’d like to serve on the committee, submit your name at the end of the survey.
