Chow’s-Trained Gymnast makes U.S. Women’s Junior National Team

Norah Flatley finished second among elite gymnasts in the balance beam competition and fifth in the all-around.

West Des Moines-trained gymnasts Norah Flatley was named to the U.S. Women’s Junior National Team Saturday after she finished second on the balance beam and fifth in the all-around competition at the P&G Gymnastics Championship Saturday, the Des Moines Register reported.

Flatley, 13, is a native of San Diego living in Cumming. She moved to Iowa to train with Chow’s Gymnastics and Dance Institute, where Olympic champions Shawn Johnson and Gabby Douglas also trained. Johnson is a West Des Moines native.

Another gymnast training at Chow’s, 13-year-old Alexis  Vasquez, finished third on the balance beam.

Flatley’s balance beam score – 29.950 – was within a point of the winner Ballie Key of Texas, whose score was 30.900. Her score in the all-around was 112.400. Key also won that event with a score of 118.550. Vasquez was 15th in the all-around with a score of 106.300.
