However, this came as a surprise to her coach Liang Chow, of Chow's Gymnastics and Dance. The Des Moines Register reports that Chow said he hasn't heard from Douglas about training.

The 17-year-old who came from Virginia to train with Chow in Iowa has been traveling and enjoying her stardom since winning two gold medals in the 2012 London Olympics.

Chow told the Register he is to meet with Douglas' mother about her possible return to training but "wants to first make sure she is serious about getting back to an elite level," the Register reports.

For her part, Douglas sounds ready to go.

"I am excited to get back in the swing of things," she said on Today.

It's going to be difficult because she hasn't been in gym much of late and she expects to be sore, she said. But she is looking forward to reuniting with her host family, who she remains close with.

Douglas was on Today promoting her new book, “Raising the Bar.”
