Taste of the Junction's Inaugural Event Includes Street Festival, Educational Presentations

The fun starts on Friday, then continues on Saturday as new cultural organization traces Valley Junction's diverse history.

Taste of the Junction, a nonprofit organization established earlier this year to increase awareness of the diverse cultures represented in Valley Junction, is hosting its inaugural event this weekend – the Valley Junction Neighborhood Reunion taking place over the Labor Day Weekend.

The celebration opens Friday street festival featuring dancers, food and craft vendors and music from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Railroad Park pavillion.

Music will be provided by Emma Negreteand and headliner group Sumpin Doo while street vendors will offer food from different cultures represented among the neighborhood population.

Rachelle Long, founder and president of the Taste of the Junction organization  convened a diverse group of Valley Junction descendants to assist in planning the Valley Junction Neighborhood Reunion.

She said events planned by the organization may include presentations by historians, food vendors, contemporary educational professionals, performances, demonstrations of Gospel influence which may include writers, producers, dancers, painters, actors, musicians, and other artists who positively influence Iowa’s Cultures.

Also on the schedule for this weekend’s is “The Junction Speaks,” which tells the neighborhood’s history through media, slide shows, a live panel discussion, pictures and interviews. That takes place from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday at Valley Community Church, 4444 Fuller Road.
