West Des Moines Will Collect Tree Branches from Massive Winter Storm Draco

Here's everything you need to know for city public works crews to pick up storm debris.

A news release from the city of West Des Moines: The City of West Des Moines will be conducting a special collection for tree branches that sustained damage from the massive winter storm event which we encountered on December 20th.  Residents who receive solid waste service under the City's solid waste program will be eligible for this special collection. Crews will be chipping branches up to 8 inches in diameter. Tree branches should be no longer than 8 feet in length and need to be placed on the public right-of-way parallel to the curb. Large diameter tree debris that cannot be chipped (8 inches and larger) will need to be handled by private tree contractors and/or the resident. The city of West Des Moines is asking residents not to put limbs and other debris left  behind after the major winter storm Draco last week on the right-of-way for collection at this time. The city said in a news release that an assessment of tree debris will be made after the holiday season. Placing the debris at the curb now could hinder snow removal efforts in the future, according to the release. Also, remember that Christmas tree and winter yard waste will be collected from Dec. 31-Jan. 11.

Roads Are Improving After Draco, But Holiday Travelers Warned of Icy Spots and Perilous Travel

If you're traveling east from West Des Moines, you might want to delay your plans for a day if possible. Some roads in that part of the state are still impassable after Draco.

Draco’s wintery blast is making travel difficult today as West Des Moines residents and Iowans prepare for a long four-day holiday weekend and is still not advised in much of eastern Iowa. Elsewhere, roads are partially or completely snow-packed, but passable, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation. Meanwhile, 256 West Des Moines customers are without power in 55 locations, according to MidAmerican Energy Co., which said in a statement it expects to make significant progress in restoring power today, the Des Moines Register reported. West Des Moines School Closed Again Today from Winter Storm Draco, First Blizzard of 2012

About 200 West Des Moines residents are still without power.

West Des Moines Community Schools students are getting an extended holiday break after administrators made the decision early this morning to cancel classes for a second day because of snow accumulation with winter storm Draco. Also closed are Iowa Christian Academy and Dowling Catholic High School.   Almost 200 West Des Moines residents are still without power this morning, according to MidAmerican Energy Co.

DART Resuming Bus Service As Planned After Draco; Express Routes Suspended for Remainder of Thursday

Three express routes in West Des Moines won't run.

From a news release: The Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority is confirming that bus service will resume at 11:45 a.m. this morning. Local routes will depart from DART Central Station at that time. Express bus routes will be suspended for the remainder of the day. All services will be operating on Friday. That means folks using the Westown Express Route, the Vista Express Route and the E.P. True Express Route will need to find another way to get around town. The National Weather Service’s blizzard warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. today. If bus travel is essential during that time, bus riders are advised to dress warmly and wait for the bus in safe, visible areas. Poor road conditions will likely require bus operators to slow …

UPDATE: Some West Des Moines Customers Have Power Restored as Winter Storm Draco's Winds Whip Lines

Blizzard is shutting down West Des Moines; 1,605 customers without power this morning. This afternoon the number dropped to 1,206 and then to 1,140. We'll keep you updated.

Update 2:30 p.m. Power was restored to the homes and businesses near the Val Air Ballroom on the north end of the Valley Junction area at about 1:30 p.m. today. As of 2:30 p.m. the MidAmerican Energy website reported 1,206 West Des Moines customers remained without power, down about 400 from this morning. The high winds continue to whip power lines and tree limbs coated with ice from last night's brief rains, and then weighed down with the 8 inches of snow the National Weather Service says fell on the city. Residents are out across town trying to dig out driveways and sidewalks, and drag downed tree limbs out of travel areas. Yeah my comment is mid america is not very reliable. I have called since 8am about 7 times letting them know my power is still not on 16 hours after it went out!!! I have four children under the ages of 14 and a rabbit 4 cats and my food is starting to go bad. Thanks a lot mid america I guess u wanna replace my food I paid three hundred dollars for   more ›
